Is AI for translation<\/strong> a good idea? YES, it is a phenomenal idea, because it makes selling worldwise much more accessible… But how good is it in reality?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve built an AI translation tool<\/a><\/strong> and translated over 500,000 products with it, so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, I can show you how things look on the inside and how good of a translator AI can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will talk about AI translation<\/strong> in general, and then talk about specific models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is AI made for translation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Perfect translation doesn’t exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not even professional human translators can write 100% accurate translations that also preserve the meaning, and convey the original emotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That being said, AI translation<\/strong> will never be 100% accurate, and that’s not a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are AI models and technologies like NMTs (Neural Machine Translation<\/a> models) like Google Translate or DeepL that have one single goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which is to translate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, we have tools like LLMs (Large Language Models<\/a>) that were not built to translate, but it is extremely good at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An example is ChatGPT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We won’t talk about NMTs or LLMs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How these technologies work is beyond the scope of this video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, as a rule of thumb, LLMs are better at preserving the emotion and meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whereas, NMTs are better at providing the most accurate word-for-word translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flaws of AI translation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The main flaws of AI translation<\/strong> are the lack of enough context and the training data set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, if you ask Google Translate to translate a word like “hood” it will offer multiple options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clothes, cars, real estate, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when you want to use it in a business context and build automations with it… it will just guess, and it rarely gets it right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, the problem with the training data can be observed at ChatGPT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has been trained on the entire internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not everybody online uses proper language, especially in multilingual contexts, which are the places where it “learned” to translate from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowing this, it is still extremely good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just don’t be surprised when it fails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if you translate thousands of products in automatic workflows, just check from time to time some of the outputs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is ChatGPT a Good Translator?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It all depends on what you’re using it for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you using ChatGPT for legal documents?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe it is not the best for that, and you should hire a human translator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you using GPT to translate product descriptions and specifications?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a great tool for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
